Francis Joseph Kennedy
Enlisted as Francis Johnson

Information and Photographs

Wife of Kennedy's Great Grandson

According to family lore, Francis Joseph Kennedy used the name Francis Johnson to enlist because his family wanted him to be a Catholic priest and he did not. He ran away and joined the army, taking the name "Johnson" so his family could not find him. Joseph was the name of Francis' 8th child; the name Joseph has come down through each subsequent generation.
